Cherries

With just over a week to go, it’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas!

Here in Australia, I always associate Christmas with cherries.  This might sound a little strange to all our friends in the Northern Hemisphere, but December is the time of year when cherry season comes into full swing here.  While the official season commences in mid-late October, it’s in December that a glut of juicy, ripe, Australian grown cherries start to find their way onto the shelves of green grocers and supermarkets (and at a much more reasonable price).

CherriesI’m only a recent convert to the humble cherry myself.  It was only a couple of years ago, while I was living in the UK, that I was tempted to give them a try and there has been no looking back since.

This will be my first cherry season since moving back to Australia, so needless to say, I have great expectations.  No doubt I’ll find some fun ways to serve up these ruby gems over the the remainder of the season (which here in Australia lasts only 100 days), but for now at least, I’m just happy to eat them straight from the bowl… how about you?
