Sweet & salty fudge balls - A Sweet MuddleWith summer just around the corner, and the run of indulgent sweets on the blog of late, I thought I’d try and share something with you this week that is not only is a little decadent, but is also good for you (in small doses).  It’s not as impossible as it sounds.

The first thing that jumped to mind were these divine sweet and salty fudge balls, which I first came across a couple of years ago thanks to Melissa Joulwan’s blog The Clothes Make the Girl.  If you’ve not come across her blog before, then it is definitely worth checking out, especially if you’re interested in learning more about following a Paleo friendly diet / lifestyle.  Unfortunately of late, I have fallen off the wagon when it comes to my take on the Paleo way of life, but it did make me re-evaluate my approach to what I eat and how it’s prepared. If you’re interested in learning more, Melissa’s blog and recipes are a great place to start.

Sweet and salty fudge balls - A Sweet Muddle

So to make these mouthfuls of pure joy, all you’ll need is:

  • 1 cup of whole pecans
  • 1 1/3 cups pitted dates
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder (I used good quality, dark cocoa)
  • sea salt and extra cocoa powder, to garnish

Given the only adaptation I’ve made to the recipe is the garnish (I’ve coated half with salt, and the other half with cocoa) I haven’t made a recipe card for you.  But, if you’d like to try making them yourself then you can find the recipe here on Melissa’s blog.  The only thing to note is that the recipe may yield less than indicated.  When I made this batch it only produced 20 balls, as opposed to 32.

Anyway, I would highly recommend you give them a try.  They’re the perfect size for a small treat, or you could serve them up after a meal with a coffee or other drink of your preference.  Best of all, they’re a sinch to make!
